FALL 2010. BROCCOLI. 12.10.10

Thanks to Dana Carvey, I’ll never be able to buy, prepare, eat or even think about broccoli again without a giggle. If you are wondering what I’m talking about, watch the timeless Saturday Night Live skit here. Priceless. Laughter is the best medicine, so they say. Actually ingesting broccoli is practically medicinal as well, with its cancer-fighting biochemicals, vitamin C, calcium, fiber and folic acid.

And so we conclude the fall season with broccoli as our headliner and strong performances by late fall produce favorites including butternut squash, fennel, parsnips, sweet potatoes and leeks. Take a look at the shopping list. A produce-heavy week awaits and it’s a good thing. If you’ve already experienced as much good cheer and merriment (read: eggnog!) as I have, you would be happy to be greeted by a fridge full of vegetables, too.

Next week look for another special holiday issue – kitchen-made gift ideas and a list of my favorite cannot-cook-without kitchen gadgets. May your days be merry and bright – and your evenings filled with calcium, vitamins and fiber.

  1. Haha that is too funny – I’m the same way, we can’t shop broccoli in our house without somebody starting to sing …
