WINTER 2011. AVOCADO. 01.07.11

“Number 19: If it came from a plant, eat it; if it was made in a plant, don’t.” Michael Pollan, author of the best-selling book The Omnivore’s Dilemma, published a skinny little book last year containing 64 clear, concise tips for eating wisely and healthfully. Food Rules is a reminder that keeping it simple is the way to go. This week’s feature – a fruit, technically – is high in both fat and calories. However, the fat and calories you find here are very different from those you find in processed, plant-made foods. The avocado’s nutritional benefits are noteworthy. High in folate and vitamin E, the avocado has been credited with all sorts of disease fighting properties from cancer defense to cholesterol lowering. It underscores the beauty of good old number 19. It’s a plant and it’s good for you, so eat it. I do recommend this book but in case you don’t pick it up, you should know my two other favorites. “Number 43: Have a glass of wine with dinner.” And of course, I’ve saved the best for last. “Number 63: Cook.”
