Party Popcorn

A big treat at our house is movie and popcorn night. I typically pop the kids popcorn in a little olive oil and add just a touch of salt. I recently made myself a batch that was seasoned with curry and you know what? Those rascals ate it all! So it occurred to me that we could quite literally spice up our popcorn and movie nights.

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 cup popcorn kernels
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 teaspoons brown sugar
  • Heat the oil over medium high heat in a large pot with a tight fitting lid. Add the popcorn kernels and cover the pot, shaking it gently from time to time. If your pot doesn’t have a glass top as mine does, just listen for the corn to start popping. Keep shaking it back and forth once in a while.
  • Meanwhile, melt butter and add cinnamon, cumin, paprika, salt and sugar. Blend well and set aside.
  • When popcorn has finished popping, remove it from the burner and carefully remove the top. Pour popcorn into a large paper grocery bag, then add the butter and spice mixture. Close the top and shake it vigorously to coat evenly.
  • Serve while cuddled under a blanket with a good movie.
