Warm Mulled Wine

When you are hosting a crowd on a chilly night, this warming drink can’t be beat. It makes the house smell like the holidays. I have made countless batches and I never seem to have any left over.

  • 1 bottle dry red wine (Shiraz or Cabernet work well)
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup bourbon
  • 1 tablespoon Cointreau
  • 1 spice sachet (2 t. whole allspice, 1/4 t. whole cloves, 1 cinnamon stick, 1 slice orange rind)
  • Cinnamon sticks, for serving

  • Combine all ingredients in a large pot. Simmer over medium-low heat for 20 minutes then serve with cinnamon sticks.
  • Quick Tips
  • 1. To make the spice sachet, wrap all the ingredients securely in a piece of cheesecloth. You can either tie it with a piece of kitchen twine or if the cheesecloth is long enough, I can typically tie the ends together like a scarf and it stays together.
  • 2. If you have a large crowd, you can make several batches at once then keep it on the stove on “warm” if you have a warming burner.
  • 3. I’ve added an orange spiked with whole cloves to this recipe. It looks pretty if the pot is out on the stove. I recommend you do this only if you are making just one batch and believe it won’t be sitting around for long. If it sits around for a while, the drink can become just a little bitter from the orange rind.
