Wine and Mulling Spices

This takes a standard hostess gift and kicks it up just a notch. Handwrite the directions right on the gift tag (if your handwriting is legible!) for a personal touch.

  • 1 bottle dry red wine – Cabernet or Shiraz
  • 1 small piece cheesecloth or spice bag* (to make spice sachet)
  • 1 blank gift tag
  • 1 pretty ribbon

  • Combine 2 teaspoons whole allspice, 1/4 teaspoon whole cloves, 1 cinnamon stick, and 1 slice orange rind in the cheesecloth or spice sachet. Close with a piece of kitchen twine or the drawstring on the bag.
  • On the blank gift tag or a small card, write the directions for warm mulled wine. Tie the directions, spice sachet and ribbon onto the neck of the bottle. Be sure to sign your name so your host or hostess knows it’s from you!
  • *You can purchase small spice bags with drawstring tops to hold the mulling spices. I found them at Sur La Table and I imagine you can get them at any store with a good selection of cooking and baking supplies.
